Who we are
CATAS is the Italian research and certification institute and test laboratory in the wood and furniture field, center of excellence also in the agricultural and food sector, industrial and environmental.
Its two laboratories are located in San Giovanni al Natisone (Udine) and Lissone (Brianza), covering a floor area of 9.500 m2 . CATAS’ team of experts includes chemists, engineers and mathematicians, making CATAS a knowledge centre able to provide its clients with exceptional integrated services.
The Technological and Chemical Departments carry out a wide range of tests and research on raw materials and end products. For each single material or product, CATAS can ascertain that it actually meets a client’s requirements, verifying conformity to standards for quality, safety, strength and durability performance. Tests are carried out according to national standards (UNI, DIN, BS, NF, ASTM, ANSI, etc.), European standards (EN) and international standards (ISO). On top of these, tests can be designed according to the specific requirements of the client (e.g. IOS MAT).
CATAS was founded in 1969 in San Giovanni al Natisone (Udine) to provide specialist technical support to local chair manufacturers. The Institute was founded by the Udine Chamber of Commerce, in order to help producers comply with international standards and, in turn, successfully market their products abroad, and to enable them to keep abreast of the latest trends in new materials.
In its early years CATAS was supported not only by the Chamber of Commerce but by several other organizations: local business associations, the association of small businesses and craft firms, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the local Specialist Technical School and the University of Udine.
In 1994, after 20 years of growth in Italy and abroad, CATAS became a limited liability company with the declared mission to encourage and support the technological development of the area’s wood and furniture companies.
In 2003 CATAS and Area Science Park open the Wood&Furniture Centre for the technological transfer in the context of the project called Innovation Network.
In 2009 CATAS acquires ASA, the chemical laboratory of the Chamber of Commerce of Udine, which serves the companies of the agricultural and food sector and offers support on the legislation about environment: a new pole of research in the agriculture and food sector is born.
In 2012 CATAS and Material ConneXion Italia open thel Material ConneXion point FVG at San Giovanni al Natisone premises.
